Spring blooming perennials and annuals are an excellent way to establish seasonal color in the garden beds. A Teaspoon of Life - You might be surprised to learn there are more living things in one teaspoon of soil than there are people on the planet. One gram of soil can contain several billion bacteria from thousands of different species. Most organisms that live in soils are microscopically small, but they are crucial for keeping soils in good condition.
The best months to direct seed poppy seeds outdoors are January or February, even when winters are harsh like the one we seem to be having this year. Poppies will germinate and perform best if they’ve gone through a natural freeze-and-thaw cycle. If you’re new to winter sowing, this may seem a bit odd, but snow serves as nature’s mulch.

Lightning bugs were once a fundamental part that we all looked forward to during the hottest season of the year, but in this day and age with densely packed communities and mowed lawns, it’s getting harder and harder to find these wonders of nature, those tiny little insects that became a magical and iconic part of every summer.
Relishing within the aroma of English lavender wafting amidst the breeze on a warm, sunny day is one of the truest pleasures of gardening. Often considered an herb, it is actually an herbaceous perennial with a semi-woody growth habit. English lavender provides good midsummer color to the garden and is often used in perennial borders and rock gardens as well as in herb gardens and scent gardens. Excellent Pollinator Plant and attracts beneficial insects.
Within this post are four members of the hylotlephium sedum family; sedum “autumn joy“. sedum “dazzleberry“, sedum “plum dazzled“, and sedum “wildfire“. Each is drought tolerant and long blooming and all are of immense benefit as a pollinator plant for butterflies, bees, moths and other wildlife and available at our garden center.
Over the past ten years, our website developer has been creating a Memorial Garden to honor his son’s mother. Geranium Bevans Variety - This is woodland edge plant (or light deciduous forest plant) and looks the best as a groundcover in half shade, or woodland garden. Bright fragrant magenta-pink blossoms with conspicuous veining and decorative deep red sepals highlight dense mounds of pine-scented foliage.
Liatris spicata - Blazing star are butterfly magnets. When in bloom it’s not unusual to see clusters of monarchs jockeying for position on the purple flower spikes – which is why regionally native blazing star species have been included on nearly all of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation Monarch Nectar Guides.
Euphorbia – Martinii Ascot Rainbow - Its narrow leaves are eye catching with yellow, green, and light green foliage. Leaves turn deep red in winter and during the cooler months the foliage at the ends of the stems becomes flushed with shades of red, pink, and orange.
Looking for a groundcover for shade? One that’s easy to grow, easy to divide, drought tolerant? One that puts on a show with its heart shaped leaves that are splashed with a streak of silver. Top that off with its soft pink blossoms that it puts forth profusely from mid spring through late summer, and what do you have? Lamium maculatum ‘Shell Pink’ Spotted Dead Nettle.
Spider Purple has dark purple flowers with an unusual petals shaped like spoons that profusely bloom from spring until fall, giving you long-lasting splashes of vibrant color in any garden. The petals on this zany osteospermum curl inward mid-petal, creating a spoon shape at the tips. An interesting character that is bound to draw attention.
If you are into herb gardening with culinary herbs, rosemary plant (Salvia rosmarinus) is an excellent choice for both the garden beds and for growing in containers. It is a fragrant herb that grows as a perennial with a rounded growth habit features slender, needle-like, grayish-green leaves on upright erect woody stem that put forth clusters of small, blue, lavender, or white flowers that appear in late spring thru early summer.
If you are into herb gardening for culinary herbs, Italian Large Leaf Basil is a must have basil plant. This culinary herb is a sweeter pesto type basil with high yields in the garden. A large variety with medium-dark green leaves, this basil is bigger than most others found in the basil family. Very aromatic and as popular with bees and butterflies as it is with chefs, this is one of our most favorite basil plants. When compared to Genovese the flavor and scent are sweeter and less clove like.
The everbearing strawberry plant is perfect for strawberry lovers—it bears fruit two to three times per year, giving you plenty of strawberries for recipes like strawberry smoothies and strawberry shortcake. Suitable for gardens and farms in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 10, everbearing strawberries are perennials that do well in dappled to full sun.
