Most organisms that live in soils are microscopically small, but they are crucial for keeping soils in good condition.
During this season when the garden beds are at rest, although I’m just yearning to get outside again and get my hands dirty in springtime’s warming soil and look for earthworms diligently composting the soil, I also relish the time I get tending to my indoor plants; a few of which are Peace Lilys (Spathiphyllum spp.), one of the easiest houseplants anyone can keep alive. As with most plants, peace lilies need to be repotted annually to ensure they continue thriving and producing those graceful, beautiful blooms that they are known for. There are, however, a few things to remember to obtain optimal results when repotting.
Using peat moss for garden purposes improves the soil. Peat moss in soil provides the right amount of texture that keeps it light and yet retains moisture. Sphagnum peat moss is a type of peat used to condition soil and give plants the medium that is perfect for root growth and nutrient uptake.
The best months to direct seed poppy seeds outdoors are January or February, even when winters are harsh like the one we seem to be having this year. Poppies will germinate and perform best if they’ve gone through a natural freeze-and-thaw cycle. If you’re new to winter sowing, this may seem a bit odd, but snow serves as nature’s mulch.
