Bagged Mulch vs Bulk Mulch
Which one is better? That was the question in an inquiry we received on social media. Herein is our reply:
Hi Allison. My husband and I are the proud owner’s of Goffle Brook Farm & Garden Center. So of course I am going to recommend our store but here is why… As a general rule bagged mulch is much cleaner than bulk mulch. Unfortunately sometimes bulk mulch can have some sticks, sometimes some mold but then sometimes it can be perfect. But is it really worth taking the chance? Until a few years ago bulk mulch used to be much cheaper than bagged mulch. Year by year the bulk mulch price is getting quite close to the bagged mulch.
Benefits of Bagged Mulch
Convenience: Bagged mulch is easy to transport and store. Its compact packaging allows for quick loading into your vehicle and placement in your garden. Pre-packaged bags eliminate the need for specialized equipment or vehicles to haul the material.
Variety: Bagged mulch is available in a wide range of colors, textures, and types, including dyed options like red, black, or brown. Specialized blends, such as cedar or cypress mulch, are often available in bags.
Ease of Application: The smaller quantity per bag allows for precise application, especially in small garden beds or around delicate plants. Pre-portioned bags make it easy to calculate exactly how much you need.
Hygiene: Bagged mulch is less likely to contain weeds, pests, or contaminants as it is processed and sealed.
Limitations of Bulk Mulch
Transportation and Storage: Bulk mulch requires a truck or trailer for transportation. If delivered, it will be dumped in one location, which can be inconvenient if you don’t have a dedicated storage space.
Labor-Intensive Application: Spreading bulk mulch requires wheelbarrows, shovels, and physical labor. It can be challenging for smaller or less physically able homeowners.
Potential Contaminants: Bulk mulch is more likely to contain weed seeds, pests, or debris since it is not packaged or sterilized like bagged mulch.
Weather Sensitivity: Bulk mulch left exposed to rain can become waterlogged and heavy, making it harder to work with. Also when exposed to rain, wet mulch can leech color onto blacktop and concrete surfaces, marring the appearance thereto
