Late August through early September is the perfect window to establish a new lawn (or repair an existing one) with seed. The warm soil insures fast germination and the cooler fall weather that follows mimics the climates these grasses are native to. Grass is a plant and plants need water to survive, especially in the hot and humid summer months, and coming off the August we’ve just experienced we all were more than a little thirsty this year.

Should I fertilize my lawn in the fall? Absolutely! Here’s why and what to use.

Most lawn experts agree that a fall fertilizer application is a good idea in cold-weather climates where winters are a period of dormancy. While lawn care companies and manufacturers of granular and liquid fertilizers recommend fertilization, independent scientific studies from university programs do confirm that late summer and fall are especially good times to fertilize turf lawns.

So why does Miracle-Gro or any other fertilizer help plants grow bigger and healthier? Fertilizer is material added to the growing medium of plants to supplement nutrient minerals that may be lacking. The minerals are used in very minor, and in some cases almost microscopic, amounts, to help construct all the different parts of the plant, it’s enzymes, proteins, vitamins, reproductive processes, etc. A deficiency of minerals will limit plant growth, while adding certain minerals to the soil (or other medium) can increase growth and yield.
