Fuschia Flowers

Hanging baskets are here in a diverse variety of flowers. One that we frequently get asked about is our Fuschias. Such a delicate and elegant exotic flower with striking and eye-catching two-tone colors. Simply put these gorgeous flowers are ideal no matter where in the garden, but have them in a hanging basket and they just profusely put forth exceptional beauty. With flared flowers hanging from drooping stems, these flowering plants are ideal for use in hanging baskets.

Originating in Central and South America and having over 100 different species and thousands of cultivated varieties to choose from, fuchsia flowers are one of the most popular choices for gardens. Their colors are typically rich and vivid, and they make the perfect focal point for any garden due to the fact that they typically bloom all the way from spring to the early fall season. They typically produce flowers in a variety of pink, purple or white shades that generally contain a single or double set of blooms. There are also a wide variety of trailing fuchsias that are excellent for border walls.

Care Instructions for Fuchsia

With proper watering and care, fuschia will grow abundantly throughout the entire summer season and into the fall. First and foremost fuschia need the proper light environment in which to flourish. Place fuschia and hanging fuschia baskets in areas of the garden that offer partial to full shade; fuchsias perform poorly in high heat and sun exposure. Place them in areas such as porches, covered outdoor living areas, within a woodland bed or covered patio areas to complement your garden decor. Keep an eye on them during summer months because too much hot weather weakens the fuchsia plant.

When it comes to watering make sure the pots and/or basket provides adequate draining as you don’t want the roots to become saturated for an extended time, leading to root rot. Water when the soil surface feels dry to the touch and maintain a moist, well-drained growing medium providing good fertility. They do get hungry so fuchsia plants require a fertilization regimen. Proper care for fuchsias means fertilizing them about every two weeks. Proper care is also inclusive of checking for insects on the leaves, taking care to check where the leaf and stem meet. Search for common infestations such as sucking insects called aphids and scales. Saturate the fuchsia plant with horticultural oil to control infestations. Remove and destroy affected plant parts when disease or infestations do occur and improve circulation by thinning the plant and watering the soil directly and not from overhead, as standing water encourages fungal disease.

What’s really great is that when the weather starts turning colder, avoid frost damage by moving your fuschia to an enclosed porch or patio or even bring them indoors. You can keep your fuchsia growing all year long by over-wintering them inside. Fuchsia plants are not hard to grow and with minimal effort you can have fuchsia growing abundantly in the right locations around both home and garden. The hanging pots will over flow and hang down with beautiful flowers so long as you have provided the right kind of care, and doing so is a “piece of cake”, so to speak…
