Kalimeris incisa – Blue Star Aster

Dasiy-like flowers with a yellowish-brown central cone bears multitudes of single 1″ pale blue flowers July into late August/ early September, and if deadheaded can encourage a longer fall bloom. The flowers attract butterflies and pollinators and will also feed the birds in winter with their seed. Blooms are good for cut flower or dried flower arrangements. Tolerant of heat and humidity it is considered drought tolerant and makes for an excellent border plant. It’s bushy and compact growth habit makes it an excellent choice for mixed perennial beds, where it adds a splash of late-season color. ‘Blue Star’ is well-suited for cottage gardens, adding a soft and airy quality to the landscape.

Blue Star Aster thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. This cultivar is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy or sandy soils. Regular watering is beneficial, especially during dry spells, to promote continuous blooming and maintain optimal growth. ‘Blue Star’ requires minimal maintenance, with deadheading spent flowers to encourage additional blooms and maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning the plant in early spring can help control its size and shape.
