Care and Placement: Elegant and Low-Maintenance

What sets the Dwarf Alberta Spruce apart from other mini Christmas tree options is its exceptional adaptability. This low-maintenance conifer favors full sun in the landscape, but is also remarkably tolerant of partial shade indoors, where light may be gentler. We recommend keeping your tree away from heat sources and direct sunlight indoors, which ensures it flourishes throughout the holiday season. These trees can be showcased on a front porch or nestled among cherished keepsakes indoors, requiring only well-drained soil and modest watering. Simply water as you would an indoor plant. Resist the urge to overwater; like most spruce trees, these little treasures thrive when their roots aren’t soggy.

Tips For Decorating A Dwarf Alberta Spruce

  • always put lights on first when decorating a Christmas tree
  • keep things more traditional and natural with a real tree. This means things like pine cones, cinnamon sticks, dried fruit and raffia, and sticking to traditional colours like red, greens and golds. We have an extensive and diverse selection of indoor holiday christmas decorating decor available to choose from
  • making a pinecone decoration is pretty easy – you just need a stash of pinecones which you can find on the ground at your local forest or you can buy them at the garden center. Use a hot glue gun to attach ribbon to hang them, and embellish if you wish with things like berries and leaves. we also have faux berry bunches that you can bundle together to pop onto the tree too – simple and effective.
  • cinnamon sticks smell wonderful and are something else you hung on your dwarf spruce tree. Just bundle some together, secure with string (you could hot glue for extra stability) decorate and hang.

Planting A Dwarf Alberta Spruce

When you opt to use a dwarf alberta spruce on good thing to do is to choose your outdoor planting spot ahead of time and dig the hole in mid November to early December and cover it to prevent accidental falling so that the soil and/or growing medium is not frozen as much and will make the transition to the ground for the plant easier.

Plant in full or part sun and well-drained soil. Provide a site with good airflow. The Alberta Spruce attracts birds. It is deer resistant and can handle high wind, heat, and cold, and is even drought tolerant once established. There is no need to prune this evergreen, but it tolerates pruning well. As a dwarf tree, the size of the root system tends to be a bit bigger than the width of the crown. The roots of this tree aren’t considered invasive so planting close to foundations or underground piping is ok.

After planting, adding a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch will help keep the soil moist. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease. Water your new tree deeply a couple times a week for the first month or two. After your plants are established, they only need watered when the potting soil is dry. This Spruce is drought tolerant after establishing. Fertilize when planting and in early spring yearly with a slow release fertilizer. If your soil is on the basic side choose a fertilizer for acid loving plants. The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is wind, cold, and deer resistant. Be sure your tree is planted where it has plenty of air flow.
