The New American Lawn Program
by Jonathan Green

Help? What do the three numbers in fertilizer mean?

Lawn and Garden Fertilizer Numbers ExplainedLet’s say we have a fertilizer that is: 10-20-10

That means that 10% of the bag is nitrogen, 20% of the bag is phosphorus & 10% of the bag is potassium

So, how do they work?

Nitrogen (up) – nitrogen is largely responsible for the growth of leaves on the plant.

Phosphorus (down) – Phosphorus is largely responsible for root growth and flower and fruit development.

Potassium (all around) – Potassium is a nutrient that helps the overall functions of the plant perform correctly.

What exactly is The New American Lawn Program by Jonathan Green?

Gone are the days that four bags of fertilizer are purchased in the spring to JUST feed your lawn. Over the course of time we have learned that taking care of your soil is just as important, no more important, than feeding your plants. Okay I am going to get a bit technical here so stick with me. It has taken me years to sum up what I am about to share with you. So here goes:

Microbes live within our soil. Microorganisms are living things that play a tremendous role in a number of necessary processes for healthy plant growth. There can be up to two trillion microorganisms per pound of soil. I like to compare it to all the marine life in the ocean. We can’t always see it but we know it is there.

Humates are a good source of energy for beneficial soil organisms. They provide many of the mineral requirements for soil microorganisms. Over the years by using too much fertilizer we reduced the humates in our soil. Humic substances help to hold water in the root zone which lessen the need for excess watering of the plant.

Jonathan Green now has a five step program

Step 2- Green up & crabgrass control

Step 3- Weed & Feed

Step 4- Love you soil

Step 5- Winter Survival

Step 1

Mag-i-cal – Mag-i-cal maximizes the effectiveness of lawn fertilizer

Corrects soil pH quickly

Contains Humates to restore soil life (microorganisms)

A lawn is supposed to have a pH between 6.2 & 7. Because we live in an area that is known to be acidic the chances are pretty good your pH could be below 6.2. Using traditional limestone to change the numbers could take over a year.

Mag-i-cal has calcium which is essential for many grass plant functions. If your soil isn’t balanced you will never enjoy a thick, healthy, dark-green lawn. Additionally, you can be wasting between 20% – 70% of your lawn fertilizer because Mag-i-cal breaks the soil down and allows fertilizer nutrients to be fully released to the plant!

Step 2

Green up & crabgrass control – 21-0-3

Contains a fertilizer and dimension (the newest technology crabgrass control). Controls crabgrass both BEFORE & AFTER it germinates. Also, controls bittercress, spurge, chickweed, henbit & many other grass & broadleaf weeds.

Crabgrass preventer should only be applied when the conditions are right. If crabgrass preventer goes on too early, you will not get control later in the season. Please make sure you ask one of our lawn specialist when to apply your crabgrass control.

Green Lawns with Jonathan Green Lawn Care ProductsPlease note you cannot seed for 4 months after applying.

Step 3

Weed & Feed – 21-0-3

Controls dandelions & over 250 other broadleaf weeks in lawns while feeding your lawn with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. Slow-release fertilizer is much like a time released medication. It slowly fertilizes the plant and the weeds will gradually disappear.

You want to apply your Weed & Feed when the weeds are actively growing in the spring or fall.

Delay seeding for four weeks after applying.

  • Avoid mowing 1 to 2 days before and after application.
  • Apply to moist grass.
  • Avoid unnecessary disturbances including watering of the treated areas for 48 hours after application. Water will wash off weed killing material.
  • Avoid applying if rainfall is expected within 48 hours following treatment.
  • It is recommended that during hot, dry conditions, application rates should be reduced by 50% to avoid possible dehydration or browning of grass.
  • May reapply in 30 days if lawn is heavily over run with weeds or if adverse low moisture conditions prevail and the weeds are in a state of poor growth.
  • May reapply in 30 days if lawn is heavily over run with weeds or if adverse low moisture conditions prevail and the weeds are in a state of poor growth.
  • Never apply this product when the temperature is in the high 80’s and above.

Love your Soil– Stops soil compaction & feeds soil microbes

Love your Soil contains the “big 6”:

  • Humates – they feed the microbes
  • Amino Acid – increases the yield and overall quality
  • Molasses – provides a quick source of energy and encourages the growth of beneficial microorganisms
  • Calcium – helps create better soil structure and healthy plants
  • Sulfur – conditions the soil and helps reduce sodium content in soils
  • Iron – If the soil is iron deficient it will cause the soil to be water logged. Iron is needed to produce chlorophyll

Step 5

Winter Survival – 10-0-20

Fall and winter feeding formula keeps your lawn greener later into the year. Provides a well-balanced formula, ideal for inter turf protection. Iron, sulfur and a slow release nitrogen help to keep the deep green color. Contains humates for root development. This fall formula helps to store nutrients for the spring.

Apply this product from late summer through fall. The last date this can be applied is November 15th in New Jersey. For a heavily damaged lawn you could apply late summer and again in six weeks for a thicker, greener lawn.

Apply to a dry lawn before a rain or water after you apply.

What if I have to seed this year in the spring?

Step 2 for Seeding

Crabgrass Preventer & New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer 10-15-10

This product prevents crabgrass and grassy weeds from germinating and allows you to plant grass seed on the same day without injuring the seedlings. We call this a selective weed preventer. This product contains a slow-release nitrogen to feed the new seedlings gently and longer. Always remember slow-release means it lasts longer.

Apply to a dry lawn and water in or apply right after a rain.

Jonathan Green at Goffle Brook FarmsGreen-up Lawn Food for Seeding & Sodding 12-18-8

Use when seeding, over-seeding or sodding. This is a high phosphorus formula to help build a vigorous root system and get new grass seed off to a fast start for a thicker, greener lawn. This product can also be used under new sod installations. Contains iron for deep greening, slow-release nitrogen and humates for good root development.

Apply on a dry lawn and water in or apply after rainfall.

Organic 4 Step Program

Step 1

Organic Weed Preventer & Lawn Food – 10-0-2

Organic weed preventer & lawn food contains all organic corn gluten that stops weeds before they sprout, plus an organic fertilizer that greens up the lawn quickly. It also releases organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. You first apply in early spring but may need to re-apply up to three times a year. This product is safe to apply where children and pets play. This product, which is patented, will prevent crabgrass, dandelions and over 20 other grassy and broadleaf weeds. This product should not be applied until the forsythia has finished blooming.

Water product in well.

Do not apply grass seed for 60-90 days after applying this product.

Step 3

Natural Beauty Organic Lawn Fertilizer – 10-0-1

Natural Beauty is rich in humates which will help to restore soil life.

Contains 12% humates to provide turf nutrition for 8 to 10 weeks.

Contains iron for deep greening. This product also works well on established lawns or new seeding. Natural Beauty contains no phosphorus and is perfect for lake and bay communities. Natural Beauty is a homogeneous fertilizer. Homogeneous fertilizers are cooked together and then ground up and made in to pellets. This allows the fertilizer to be distributed evenly.
